Author Guidelines

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

1. Acta Scientiarum. Health Sciences, ISSN 1679-9291, is published twice a year by the State University of Maringá.
2. The journal publishes original papers in Health Sciences, such as Clinical Analyses; Physical Education, Nursing, Pharmacy; Pharmacology, Phoniatry and Audiology, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, Medicine, Nutrition, Dentistry and Public Health Policies.
3. Author(s) is/are accountable for data, ideas, concepts and preciseness of references in the scientific articles. Eventual mentioning of commercial products and trademarks does not imply in any recommendation for use by the Editorial Board.
4. Reports are expected to be based on the most advanced techniques appropriate for the experiments. When applicable, a certificate by the Committee for Ethics and Bio-security is mandatory.
5. Papers are published in Portuguese or in English. They must be concise and consistent in style. The editors do not necessarily endorse the views expressed by the author(s).
6. Evaluation of articles shall be made by three reviewers of the article’s specific area; they must integrate higher institutions and researches with a publishing history. After appropriate corrections and possible suggestions, the article will be accepted or not for publishing. The final decision shall be given by the Editorial Board.
7. Three printed copies of the articles shall be sent to the Editorial Board, together will a forwarding letter. A declaration on transference of copyright, originality and exclusivity, coupled to a declaration by the Committee for Ethics and Bio-security (when mandatory) are also required.
8. Articles are to be sent via Internet through the Por ACTA.
9. Conflict of interests may be personal, commercial, political, academic or financial. Conflict of interests occurs when authors, revisors or editors have vested interests that may affect the writing or the evaluation of unpublished papers.
Authors are requested that on submitting a paper for possible publication they should acknowledge or disclose financial conflicts or others that may have affected their scientific work. Authors should identify all financial funding given during the execution of their work and other personal bonds with regard to the above. The revisor should inform the editors on any conflict of interests that may influence the manuscript's analysis and should declare him/herself ineligible for this particular task.
10. As from 2010 authors are accountable for the revision of the text in Portuguese or for its translation into a foreign language. Text revision and translation should be paid for by the authors to the authorized revisors who will forward a certificate to this end.
11. Formatation and other conventions are set below:
a) On submission the full name(s) of the author(s) (six at the most), her/his/their institutional address(es) and the e-mail of the author for correspondence should be inserted
b) Articles should be subdivided into the following sub-headings: Abstract; Key words; Introduction, Materials and methods/ Methodology, Results/Discussion; Conclusion/ Final Considerations; Acknowledgements (optional) and Works Cited. Above items should be in bold and unnumbered.
c) The title, with no more than 20 words, in Portuguese and in English, must be precise. A more concise (running) title with no more than six words may be provided.
The abstract (not exceeding 200 words) should contain information about the objective of the investigation, experimental materials, methods, results and conclusions. Abstract should not be overloading with numbers and quotes. Up to six key words must be provided at the end of both abstracts in Portuguese and in English. Terms should be those listed in DECS-LILACS elaborated by BIREME.
d) Article should not exceed 20 pages, including figures, tables and list of references. Pages should be numbered and main text in 1.5 cm-line spacing throughout. Article should be edited in Word for Windows, Times New Roman or Arial 12pt font.
e) Paper format should be A4, with all page margins at 2.5 cm.
f) File containing the article to be transferred during submission should not exceed 2MB, and should have no identification label of the author, including in the option properties of Word.
g) Tables, figures and micrographs must be set on the text after being quoted.
h) Figures and Tables should be preferentially 7.65 cm wide, not exceeding 16 cm.
i) Digitized Figures should have 300 dpi resolution and preferentially recorded in jpg. Illustrations in color are not accepted for publication.
j) The International System of Measures should be used.
k) Equations should be edited by compatible software to text editor.
l) Variables should be identified after equation.
m) Review of articles will be published when authors are invited by the Editorial Board or by the Chief Editor of Eduem.
n) Scientific articles in English are given priority in publication. They should comprise at least 20% of articles in each number.
o) Eighty percent (80%) of the references should have been listed on the database ISI Web of Knowledge, Scielo, Lilacs, Medline/Pubmed or Scopus during the last 10 years. Preference to international citations of articles is recommended. Citations from monographs, proceedings, abstracts, expanded summaries, newspapers, magazines, technical bulletins and electronic documents will not be accepted. References to dissertations and theses should be
avoided.
p) This citations or Works Cited should be placed in alphabetical order, based on the Brazilian Association for Technical Rules (ABNT), following examples below. For in-text quotes, use surname and year: Braunwald (2008) or (BRAUNWALD, 2008); for two authors Balbinotto Neto e Silva (2008) or (BALBINOTTO NETO; SILVA, 2008); tree authors or more, utilize the first and et al. (LANG et al. 2008).

REFERENCE MODELS


References should be listed in alphabetic order and justified, according to the examples below, based on the Brazilian Association for Technical Rules (ABNT). Titles of reviews should not be abbreviated but given in full, without by place of publication.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
