Abstract

Leather industries produce a great volume of effluents, and chromium is the principal agent used in the leather tanning. An alternative/additional method of treatment of this effluent is the biosorption, passive link of metals by alive or dead biomass. The purpose of this work was to verify the influence of buffer solution on chromium(III) biosorption by the seaweed Sargassum sp. biomass. The evaluation was performed by kinetic study and batch equilibrium experiments in systems with and without buffer solutions. The buffer solution used were acetic acid/sodium acetate and potassium bftalate/cloridric acid. The results showed that the systems with buffer solution needed a longer time to reach the equilibrium, the buffer solutions were not able to maintain the pH and the isotherms showed a reduction of the biomass biosorptive ability.
