Abstract

The leaves from carambola (Averrhoa carambola L.) have been utilized for the production of the herbal medicine Glico-Vitae^® (GV) which is indicated for non-insulin-dependent diabetes melittus (NIDDM). The pre-clinical study of the liophyliled GV, administered intragastrically, showed absence of acute toxicity and an antihyperglycemic effect (from 30 mg/kg). In addition a physical-chemistry study of the leaves used in the preparation of this phytoterapic was performed. Finally, GV was analyzed by thin-layer chromatography.

Possui graduação em Farmácia Bioquímica pela Universidade de São Paulo (1974), mestrado em Química pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos (1988) e doutorado em Química pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos (1993). Pós-Doutorado em farmacognosia na Universite de Lausanne (Suiça) (1997). Atualmente é professor Associado da Universidade Estadual de Maringá, departamento de farmácia e farmacologia.
