Telling multiple stories at the same time: a theory of picturebooks with parallel narratives
Abstract
Based on the analysis of a specific picturebook format, one that includes two or more narratives sharing the same physical space, this study aims to identify the different creative strategies used by the authors to increase the narrative potential of the traditional picturebook, challenging its material limits. With obvious repercussions at the metafictional level by the way they draw the reader's attention to their format, construction and material dimension, these picturebooks also challenge the reading skills of the readers, requiring specific manipulations, re-readings and the establishment of constant relationships between the various stories they include.
