REPRESENTAÇÕES DA DIÁSPORA NOS ROMANCES DE CARYL PHILLIPS

Resumo

Analisa-se a representação da diáspora do Negro durante a escravidão e no mundo contemporâneo em dois romances do autor caribenho Caryl Phillips. O fenômeno da diáspora e dos movimentos diaspóricos é investigado e inserido no contexto da colonização, migração, escravidão, crioulização e cultura híbrida. Crossing the River (1993) e A Distant Shore (2003) narram dois momentos da diáspora do Negro. Enquanto Crossing the River rasteia certos eventos na vida de três negros no Novo Mundo após terem sido vendidos, ainda crianças, pelo pai na África, A Distant Shore revela a diáspora contemporânea do Negro que foge dum país africano, mergulhado em guerra civil, para a Inglaterra, e suas tentativas para encontrar uma vida acolhedora. O preconceito e o deslocamento frustram as suas expectativas no exato momento em que começa a surgir um tênue indício de comunicação com uma mulher branca. Nesses dois romances Phillips discursa sobre a inutilidade de voltar à cultura africana primitiva, a experiência de umheimlichkeit, o constante deslocamento, o desenraizamento causados pelo regime escravocrata e pela hegemonia branca em vigor. Abstract. The representation of Negro diaspora during slavery and in the modern world is analyzed within the context of two novels by Caribbean Caryl Phillips. The diaspora phenomenon and diasporic movements are investigated in the wake of colonization, migration, slavery, creolization and hybrid culture. Crossing the River (1993) and A Distant Shore (2003) narrate two different instances in the Negro diaspora. Whereas Crossing the River records events in the life of three Negroes in the New World after having been sold by their father in Africa, A Distant Shore reveals the contemporary diaspora of a Negro who runs away from an African civil war stricken country and goes to England expecting a humane place. Racial bias and displacement frustrate his expectations at the precise moment that some communication with a white woman starts. In these two novels Phillips debates the uselessness of returning to primitive African Culture, the experience of umheimlichkeit, constant displacement, uprootness caused by a slave regime and by white hegemony still at large.
