Abstract

The polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited autosomal dominant genetic disorder, which is characterized by cysts in the renal parenchyma and, less frequently, hepatic and pancreatic. It is one of the most common hereditary diseases in cats, being more frequent in the Persian breed. Clinical signs derive from impaired renal function and include: hyporexia, vomiting and bloating. The diagnosis is perfomed by abdominal ultrasound, PCR, or, post mortem findings. There is no specific treatment and therapy consists in controlling clinical signs. The aim of the present study is to report a case of PKD in a mixed breed cat attended at the veterinary hospital school, which the diagnosis of PKD was confirmed by necropsy and histopathology.
