Abstract

Attitudes related to the science of Statistics from the Scientific Initiation Program students of the State University of Maringá during 2000 are provided. Scale of Attitudes toward Statistics (SAS) and a questionnaire for additional information were used. Ninety-eight students participated in the sample. About 70% had already worked in research projects. Most students (75%) agree that Statistics are needed in research work; 11.23% do not trust the results; only 38.78% of students considered them important. Score average obtained by SAS reached 56.16 points (showing a positive attitude). Reality of scale was high (Cronbach´s alpha) 0.937. The Kruskal-Wallis test was not significative for the difference between mean of the scores of groups formed by areas and gender. It was statistically significant only by self-evaluation
