Urban rivers are exposed to great degradations and alterations in their water and morphology caused by human actions in the watershed. The present work sought to evaluate these questions through a case study developed in an urban watershed in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil. To that end, different procedures were used, such as field surveys, interviews with local inhabitants, use of satellite imagery and evaluation of river morphology by bathymetry to check for channel instability. It was possible to conclude that a great quantity of solid residues is thrown into the river and most sewage is disposed directly into the stream channel. Moreover, the increase in sediment production from civil construction has created sedimentation on the outlet. Therefore, it was possible to conclude that the lack of infrastructure and environmental education are reflected on the channel´s alterations.Downloads
