The effect of supplements with protein and mineral salt on growing and finishing steers' performance
Abstract
The objective of this work was to evaluate during November and January the effect of supplements with protein and mineral salt compared with mineral salt on growing and finishing steers performance and evaluate the chemical composition, and in vitro dry matter digestibility of star grass (Cynodon plectostachyrus Pilger). Thirty-six steers and 2 pastures of star grass were used. The average daily intake of mineral salt and protein mineral salt was 75 and 230g per animal a day. There was no difference (p > 0,05) between the average daily gain (ADG) and the finishing weight. The ADG was 0.73 and 0.79kg per animal a day for growing steers and 0.72 and 0.61kg per animal a day for finishing steers, for mineral or protein mineral salt respectively. The average availability of forage was 3650 kg DM/ha. Leaf proportion reduced and stems proportion rose during experimental period. The levels of CP, ADF and IVDMD were 7.6%, 43.6% and 54.5%.Downloads
