Abstract
The effect of latex band at the ovarian pedicle on postoperative, carcass performance and quality was evaluated in 23 Nelore breed heifers, eight-month-old and 130 kg of average weight. They were allocated in two groups: Group I was constituted of 11 heifers with latex band, and Group II was constituted of 12 non-castrated heifers. The latex ring was applied at the ovarian pedicle via an incision in the flank. On postoperative, potential complications were evaluated, as well as average daily weight gain (ADWG), muscle conversion, body weight after fastening and body weight at the time of inspection. The surgical procedure was executed without complications, and proved to be effective for suppressing estrous. One of the animals (9%) presented partial dehiscence on the wound. The ADWG of GI was 0.308 Kg, and GII was 0.311 Kg, outlining that the animals from GI presented a numerically higher meat gain.Downloads
