Abstract

The age and growth of Plagioscion squamosissimus in the Barra Bonita reservoir from August 1992 to July 1993, based on the annual ring method of otoliths are analyzed. The time during which otolith annuli are formed in males and females was established by plotting the bimonthly average length of the specimens with the same number of annuli. Length growth curve was obtained by Von Bertalanffy mathematical expression and weight growth curve was determined by deductive method from the mathematical expressions of the growth curve in length and weight/length relation. It was observed that ring formation on the otoliths occurs during the bimester December/January, coinciding with the reproductive period that starts in the second year of life for both sexes. At the Barra Bonita reservoir, the growth of this species is allometric and slow. Specimens can reach a maximum length of 68.4cm and 89.1cm for males and females, respectively.
