Abstract

The results of the taxonomic study of epilithic diatoms from Itajaí-Mirim River in Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil, are presented. Sampling work was conducted during the spring season (September 2003). The study revealed 22 species belonging to 18 genera distributed in 13 families. Among these species, there are: Gomphonema affine; Hipodonta hungarica; Navicula capitatoradiata; Pleurosira laevis var. laevis; Surirella angusta, and Tryblionella levidensis, that are new records to Santa Catarina State. Species composition of such communities varies along the river according to distinct levels of environmental stress. Species with wide distribution were observed, and others were restricted to pristine areas
