Abstract

Four environments with different hydrodynamic characteristics were selected. The abiotic limnological data from the coastal area was collected simultaneously to the biotic data. During the low water period the higher density of periphytic algae was observed. No significant differences occurred during the hydrological periods studied by quantitative analysis of the periphytic algae community. However, a tendency for more variance in data during the low water period was observed. There was a significant difference among the environments. The highest density value was measured in the lotic environment during the high water period. In low waters, differences between densities were sharper, lagoa das Garças presented the highest total density. The Canonical Correspondence Analysis summed up 92.6% of the total data variability, discriminating environments according to hydrodynamic regimen. In short, the periphytic algae community structure as related to classes corresponded to the differences in the hydrodynamic regimen of the environments associated with the floodplain in upper Paraná River
