Abstract

The robalo-peva is an estuarine-dependent species that has great potential for aquaculture. Thus, it is very important to determine the effect of salinity on its early life history. The present study evaluated the influence of different salinity levels 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 on egg hatching and quality of larvae. Experimental units were beakers with 800 mL of water at 26ºC of temperature. Parameters used in statistical analysis were rates of hatching and of deformed larvae by means of the χ2 non-parametric test (α=0.05). There was a significant dependence between salinity and the evaluated parameters. The best results in hatching rate were obtained at 35 and 30, probably due to the positive effect on eggs flotation. Deformed larvae were observed (18 to 43%) in all salinity levels. Taking into account both parameters, hatching and deformed larvae, the range 30 to 35 could be recommended as the most appropriate for incubation of robalo-peva eggs
