Abstract

This work was carried out at the Laboratório de Entomologia da Embrapa - CNPA, in Campina Grande, state of Paraíba, Brazil, in 1998/99, to study the duration and viability of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) larvae, fed with Aphis gossypii (Homoptera, Aphididae) and Sitotroga cerealella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), under controlled conditions. The temperature was 25+-2º C, 70+-10% UR and 12-hour photophase. The C. externa pre-imaginal development was normal: larval phase with three instars, pre-pupa and pupa. The results showed that C. externa larvae fed on A. gossypii had a first and third instar longer than the ones fed with S. cerealella. However, no effect was observed in the phases' viability, excepting the pre-pupa. C. externa can feed on both preys without viability loss, although this may enhance some phases' duration.
