Abstract

The ecological knowledge is an empiric popular wisdom stored by the fishermen’s natural environmental practice. Changes in ecosystem affect the explored natural resources as well as the traditional practice dependent on them. This paper aims at presenting the upper Paraná river floodplain fishermen’s traditional ecological knowledge from Porto Rico (PR) and Porto São José (PR) regions. A brief comment on fragmentation theory is presented because of the floodplain fragmentation imposed by the construction of hydroelectric dams. Three phrases and one proverb, which reveal the dynamics of the fishermen’s ecological process, were registered and confronted with the scientific knowledge of the region. The phrases show a popular and traditional interpretation in agreement with the upper Paraná river floodplain scientific discoveries. The ecosystem fragmentation and loss of tradition, due to the fishery practice abandon endanger that popular wisdom.

Pós-doutorado em co-manejo pesqueiro pela Universidade de Cape Town (Africa do Sul) em 2007 na Unidade de Avaliação Ambiental (EEU), depto. de Ciências Geográficas e Ambientais. Doutora em Ecologia de Ambientes Aquáticos Continentais pela Universidade Estadual de Maringá/NUPELIA (2002). Mestre em Ciências da Engenharia Ambiental pela USP (Universidade de São Paulo) em 1995 e graduada em Licenciatura em Ciências Biológicas pela UNESP de Rio Claro (Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho) em 1992. Atualmente é professora titular da Universidade Estadual de Goiás, campus de Anápolis. Compõe o quadro permanente de professores do Programa de Mestrado em Ecologia e Evolução da Universidade Federal de Goiás. Tem experiência na área de Ecologia, com ênfase em Economia Ecológica, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: limnologia, cerrado, diversidade, co-manejo da pesca, socioeconomia pesqueira e valoração econômica Currículo Lattes
