Abstract

The prevalence of Hepatitis B was verified in 1,918 blood donors of Apucarana's Haemotherapy Center, state of Paraná, Brazil, from May to December, 1994. Hepatitis B markers (HBsAg, anti-HBc and anti-HBs) were characterized by enzyme immunoassay. The anti-HBs marker was studied in blood donors showing anti-HBc but not HBsAg. The HBsAg prevalence was 0.7% in the general population of blood donors. The prevalence was 1.2% and 0.1% in the first-time donors and non-first-time ones, respectively. The anti-HBc prevalence was 25.5% in the general populations of blood donors, 26,6% in the first-time donors and 23.9% in the others (p=0.09). The anti-HBc/anti-HBs co-positivity was 84.1%. The HBsAg prevalence indicates that this is a low endemicity area. The high prevalence of anti-HBc in negative HBsAg blood donors suggests that this population is under risk of infection.
