Abstract
The aim of this study is to understand the role of the family in the breastfeeding process. This descriptive research was carried out in Fortaleza – Ceará – Brazil, by a qualitative approach. The selected subjects were 10 relatives of breastfeeding mothers living in Mucuripe. The data was collected by semi-structured interviews applied to the subjects’ own homes in January and February, 2003. The analysis of the data led to the characterization as well as the categorization of the interviewees' testemonies. Results highlighted myths and tabus, successful and unsuccessful experiences and interventions, which reinforced and harmed the breastfeeding process. The family showed to be an important factor of interference in the breastfeeding dynamics. Therefore, it is the nurses and all other health professionals' duty to use it in favor of breastfeeding.Downloads
