Abstract

This is a quanti-qualitative study which aimed to characterize the main health problems of families and to describe the services offered. 34 records of families assisted from March 2000 to November 2002 by the project Promoting Life in Vila Esperança were analyzed. The study was performed in November 2002 and the collected data followed a script developed by the researchers. We found out that most of the assisted families, of three people each, live with an average of two minimum salaries. The main problems pointed out in this study were those due to mental handicap and arterial hypertension. The family relationship is hindered and the proposed treatment was based on the individual needs of each family. The methodological theoretical support followed was Horta's (1979) and Travelbee's (1979).
