Abstract

The study deals with the psychiatric patient and his family’s daily analysis in the home, by the nurse's visit to the patient’s home as a means of further care. The patient’s difficulties as well as the relationships and the living possibilities with his family in the home were approached in this research. Etnomethodology is the focus of this qualitative study. The data was obtained through participating observation and open interviews collected during the visits to patients’ homes. Michel de Certeau`s “Practice of Every day Life” was adopted as a theoretical support to guide the discourse analysis of the subjects. An axis to the reflexive process was formed by the discussions originating themes, based on the subjects understanding of the surrounding family relationships. Results point to the reshaping of hospital nursing practice, reflecting thus on how nursing care offers few perspectives in approaching patients to their families.
