Abstract
The present study was accomplished with the purpose of characterizing the victims of road accidents with motorcycles in the urban area of Maringá - Paraná State, in 1995. It was analyzed 599 victims recorded in official reports who were admitted for hospital treatment, as well as victims who died at the place of the accident. The results show the predominance of males, 20-29 years of age, mainly residents of Maringá. Evaluating the severity of accidents, it was verified that 3.2% were lethal, with most deaths occurring in the first 24 hours. Data also revealed a high percentage of hospitalization. The body part most affected was the head, followed by upper and lower limbs. Wounds and fractures were the most frequent lesions. The study corroborates information described in literature, alerting to the relevance of accidents involving young motorcyclists and shows the urge to concentrate efforts in the sense of taking steps towards adopting prevention policies and improving the quality of assistance to the victims of road accidents.Downloads
