Evaluation of the toxicity and antyhyperglycemic potential of Averrhoa carambola L. (Oxalidaceae)
Abstract
The leaves from carambola (Averrhoa carambola L.) have been utilized for the production of the herbal medicine Glico-Vitae® (GV) which is indicated for non-insulin-dependent diabetes melittus (NIDDM). The pre-clinical study of the liophyliled GV, administered intragastrically, showed absence of acute toxicity and an antihyperglycemic effect (from 30 mg/kg). In addition a physical-chemistry study of the leaves used in the preparation of this phytoterapic was performed. Finally, GV was analyzed by thin-layer chromatography.Downloads
