The influence of behavioral maternal factors on low birthweight
Abstract
Evaluation of influence of behavior factors is provided in cases of low weight at birth. Sample population comprised mothers and their under one-year old children, assisted for health units of Maringá, State of Paraná, in 1998. LBW children were those weighing < 2500 g (WHO); mothers at risk were who smoked 5 or more cigarettes/day and those who took 3 or more cups of coffee/day. Within the mothers with LBW children, 21.0% were smokers. Four hundred and nineteen mothers (72.8%) drank coffee. Multiple analyses showed that, mothers that smoked 5 or more cigarettes/day presented a danger 3.49 times higher in conceiving LWB children. Although estimates do not present a causal relationship between caffeine and weight at birth, smoking influences fetal growth, as has been shown by the proportion of smokers among mothers with LWB children.Downloads
