Abstract

Although there are in Mato Grosso three public higher education institutions, as well as, several other private colleges carrying out teaching, research and extension, mainly about the state, there are few publications contextualizing the territorial formation of Mato Grosso’s counties and, when they do, it is in a general context. This present study aims at characterizing the territorial formation of Araputanga county - MT in pioneers and not pioneers’ point of view, noting the evolutionary process which permeates the construction of this community. Methodologically, bibliographical readings, investigation of private and public written documents, interviews with pioneers and not pioneers, were made, exploring their knowledge of the county’s territorial formation. Fifteen people who were considered "founders", as they arrived at the location before its political-administrative emancipation in 1979, and 29 "non-founders", who moved to the locality from 1980 onwards, were interviewed. The interviewees were asked about how they came to the municipality, how they lived in the community, health, education, the economy that prevailed during the period, as well as the process of political formation in that city, the origin of the first inhabitants, the main celebrations, dwellings that stood out more at the time and how was the vegetation in the period of his arrival. As a result, it was made possible to analyze the socio-spatial changes that occurred in the municipality during the studied period.
