Abstract

A family, in general, carries out the function of taking care, promoting health and well being, and providing protection. In a family with a deaf child, a function is added, which is learning another language - Libras. The objective of this study is to identify in the literature, the role of the family of a deaf child. It is a reflection structured from the revision of publications that had as theme a study on families of deaf people. The study showed how difficult the acceptance of deafness is for the parents, as well as it is emphasized the importance of the Language of Signs for the development of the deaf and for a better family relationship. It was concluded that the communication plays a fundamental role for the life of any individual, providing to them, besides the cultural development, an outline of their own identity.
