NAS FRANJAS DA SOCIEDADE: OS ESMOLADOS DAS MISERICÓRDIAS DO ALTO MINHO (SÉCULOS XVII E XVIII)
Abstract
Resumo. Nas franjas da sociedade encontrava-se um volume alargado de homens, mulheres e crianças ao longo dos séculos XVII e XVIII, pessoas incapacitadas de proverem a sua subsistência, recorrendo à caridade, fosse ela particular ou privada. Normalmente, eram ajudados por estas duas formas de assistência em simultâneo. O nosso trabalho pretende conhecer e analisar os grupos de providos pelas Misericórdias do Alto Minho - Portugal – durante o período assinalado e compreender as razões que atiraram esta população para a pobreza. Pretendemos ainda estudar as respostas destas instituições de assistência, conhecer as esmolas, a sua durabilidade e avaliar os tempos em que eram praticadas. É ainda nosso objectivo reflectir sobre o significado e importância da dádiva no Antigo Regime. Sabendo que a piedade cristã se devia direccionar para todos os necessitados, pretendemos analisar a actuação das Misericórdias e conhecer os principais grupos beneficiados. Abstract. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, there was a large group of men, women and children on the fringes of society who were unable to subsist on their own and had to make the most of private and public charity. As a matter of course, they were helped by these two forms of assistance. Current research analyzes these groups of people who were helped by the Alms Houses in the Alto Minho, Portugal, during the above mentioned period and investigates the reasons why this population was in fact in such a destitute state. The solutions that these assistance institutions forwarded, the meaning of alms, their durability and the period in which they existed are investigated.
