Ordem e desordem em São Paulo no limiar do século XX

Resumen

O propósito deste artigo é desenvolver o estudo dos conflitos urbanos que aconteceram na cidade de São Paulo na passagem do século XIX para o século XX., especialmentge os conflitos entre a polícia e a população civil e conflitos acontecidos entre os diversos corpos de polícia. Durante o rápido desenvolvimento da cidade de São Paulo, contrariamente à idéia de um período ordeiro e tranqüilo, de fato, houve processo bastante conflituoso e repleto de desordens. Os policiais que deveriam dar proteção à população, muitas vezes, se organizavam como quadrilhas, com o objetivo de atacar e roubar a população. Os habitantes da cidade nem sempre eram vitimas pacíficas desse processo. Os imigrantes, como principais alvos dessa violência, reagiam. Essa era a cidade que marchava rumo ao “progresso”. Mas, marchava desordeiramente, crescendo em meio a esses conflitos. A cidade mesma era o próprio conflito entre o velho e o novo. ABSTRACT. The purpose of this article is to investigate the urban conflicts that took place in the city of São Paulo during the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, especially those between the police and the citizens and between the different police corps. The fast process of development of the city of São Paulo thought of as an orderly and peaceful period revealed to be indeed a period of conflicts and disorders. The men that should protect many times organized themselves into gangs that attacked and robbed the population, which did not always behave as peaceful victims, especially the immigrants that constituted the main target of that violence. The city of São Paulo advanced disorderedly toward “progress” among these conflicts, representing the very conflict between the old and the new.
