Abstract

The objective of this work is to decompose the growth in labor productivity in Brazil in the recent period (2000-2018) using the shift-share model, which is able to determine whether the variation in aggregate productivity was due to the variation in sectoral productivity or displacement of employment to sectors with different levels of productivity, and where variation in the growth rate is observed. To this end, it is first necessary to carry out an assessment of the Brazilian productive structure, analyzing the possibility of a process of deindustrialization and reprimarization of the export basket, reaching the theme of structural change. As a result of the decomposition model applied, there is a low productivity growth in the recent period, related to the reallocation of labor from agricultural and industrial sectors to the service sector. However, it is not possible to say that this process is causing a structural change.
