Abstract

Ourinhos has its origin linked to the expansion of the railroad E.F. Sorocabana , which hit the area of that municipality at the beginning of the twentieth century . The article poses the division that led to the railroad tracks in the urban space, in the period between 1908-1950, identified as the genesis of Ourinhos. So part of the expression is also quite popular and cited by the authors in the history of Ourinhos, “above the line " and “below the line”. This expression has the meaning that “above the line”, in the south, a greater economic development in addition to being the place of residence of the wealthier social classes while the "below the line" in the northern region, comprised residences and commercial establishments degraded or simply humble. The methodological procedure used consisted of interviews with ancient residents of Ourinhos, analysis of documents such as old photos, consulting the literature on the history of the municipality and others that proved relevant. The main hypothesis examined in this article is whether spatial division caused by the railway can be seen as a process of motivating residential segregation in the genesis of Ourinhos.
