THE GENESIS OF THE SMALL CITIES OF THE URBAN NETWORK OF OURINHOS-SP DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY

Abstract

This work is partially related to the results of the doctoral research of the present author and was originally presented at the IX Simpósio Paranaense de Geografia, and the present text being the result of the contributions obtained at the time of the presentation of the same. Also included were reflections on the latest field surveys related to the conclusion of the author's thesis, made in december 2018. The research cited has as a geographic cut the small cities of the urban network of Ourinhos-SP, the genesis of these cities being one of the aspects. The objective of this work is to discuss the genesis of the cities of the said urban network as to the role they play in this point geographical. The first edition of the Region of Influence of the cities (IBGE, 1972) is used to help the understanding of the urban network in the mentioned period, relating to the analysis of secondary data and bibliographies pertinent to the theme. It was concluded that, in the analyzed period, the urban network of Ourinhos was still strongly linked to rural activities, and the small cities played an important role in the urban network because they supplied the demand for rural activities, based on coffee monoculture.
