Abstract

Urban expansion favors the gradual increase of degraded areas, reducing and fragmenting vegetation. Many urban green areas are also modified, with urban environmental quality depending on them. The inadequate management of degraded areas contributes to the intensification of erosion processes, soil impoverishment and the involvement of adjacent areas. The recovery of these areas is necessary, however most plans do not consider the Environmental Services (Ecosystem Services) involved in the process. In view of this, this article aims to verify the potential of providing Environmental Services in the recovery of degraded areas in urban areas, based on an evaluation protocol that was used in three plans implemented in the metropolitan region of Salvador, Bahia. Thus offering subsidies for an analysis of opportunities associated with the theme based on the approach of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. The proposition points to opportunities for improving Degraded Area Recovery Programs, from diagnosis to implementation.
