Z GENERATION: CHALLENGES OF EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Abstract

Thinking about consumer society, environmental education and Geography at school and sustainability, this work brings us a discussion about the importance in the new generation formation for a more sustainable world. Born in the digital era, Z generation has access to a large amount of information in a very high velocity. That’s why it has be seen with a great potential to be explored by the consumer market. Therefore, this article aims to discuss and increase the importance of a school education focused on sustainability so that the student can reflect on their position and behavior in the consumer society, enabling a change of attitude. To this end, the text expresses a set of didactic experiences applied in two schools, one public and the other private. The reflection on them, from the point of view of Geography, was based on the literature on consumer society, environmental education and for sustainability and Generation Z. A group with 247 students, from the 9th grade of elementary school to the 3rd grade of the High School was analyzed. Among the results presented, it can be concluded that there is a long way to go when it comes to environmental education and education for sustainability in the cases studied.
