Abstract

Field identification of bankfull stage is a recurring problem. The work analyzes the relationship between the frequency and magnitude of floods with morphological and sedimentological indicators of bankfull stage in Guavirá stream at Marechal Cândido Rondon, West of Paraná state, Brazil. The study was carried out in incised channel along 80 m transect line and a watershed area equal to 8.31 km2. The study consisted of surveying of longitudinal and transversal profiles and monitoring of floods were carried out between 2006 to 2013. In the profiles, several bankfull indicators often cited in the literature were identified: aluvial break (H1), top of scour line (H2), inflection in slope of the bank (H3) and surface of valley flat (H4). Were recorded 182 floods, with minimum and maximum discharge equal to 3.27 and 33.90 m3/s and mean, median and mode values equal to 4.58, 4.12 and 3.45 m3/s respectively. Comparing the floods statistics with the altimetric positions of the indicators suggests that H1 and H2 features, which coincide with the mode and median of the floods, can be used as indicators of bankfull stage in incised channels of the region.
