Abstract

It is certain that the pandemic will significantly alter the demographics. At the same time that it occurs, the deprivation of data from the Demographic Census still generates many uncertainties. In this way, the estimates are valued as a possibility to try to update the data and identify some trends. Among the inquiries are those regarding which demographic trends persist and whether it is possible to identify new ones. We have insisted on the importance of problematizing the demographic decline that occurred in many small towns/localities, which we observe mainly in the north of Paraná, but which also affects municipalities in other regions. This region was marked by demographic superlatives. Sometimes the growth was intense and fast in the process of effective capitalist occupation, sometimes with the socio-spatial transformations that occurred as a result of economic changes, it has gone through an intense process of population loss. However, in this work, the questions open to possible new trends, taking as a reference the cut of the Intermediate Region of Maringá with 115 municipalities grouped into seven Immediate Regions. While we verify a persistence of the negative variation of the population, we observe municipalities that, on the contrary, show significant population growth, in some cases they are municipalities that in previous decades lost and that now present a reversal of the process.
