Abstract

In mid-2006 the city of Sarandi-PR deposited its municipal solid waste in an open dump. Then, in 2008, a project was started for the installation of a landfill in the municipality. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the landfill of the city of Sarandi-PR, in order to point out potentialities and weaknesses. For this, the WLQI (Waste Landfill Quality Index) method was applied, in order to qualify the conditions of the project. Thus, an on-site visit was carried out to check the litter covering, presence of vultures or seagulls, presence of scavengers, breeding, efficiency of the surveillance team, enclosure of the area, waterproofing of the landfill, drainage, slurry treatment system, gas drainage system, compliance with project stipulations, among others. The results were as follows: 35 points for site characteristics out of a total of 45 points, 45 points for installed infrastructure out of a total of 45 points and 45 points for operating conditions out of a total of 45 points totaling an average of 10,0 points, characterizing it suitable for installation and operation.
