Abstract

The peri-urban zone, which is considered by several authors as a transition area between the countryside and the city, has specificities that make it unique and complex, constituting the object of study of many researchers. Among these specificities, stand out its dynamism, arising from the proximity to the city, and its multifunctionality, resulting from an intense dispute of land uses between urban and rural activities present in this area. The objective of this article is to briefly analyze the formation of the peri-urban zone and clarify the dynamics and characteristics of this area, applying such information to the reality of the municipality of Regente Feijó/SP through the identification and analysis of some characteristic elements of this space in the municipality. The results, obtained mainly through literature review and analysis of satellite images of the studied landscape, show that the peri-urban zone of Regente Feijó is multifunctional, housing typically urban activities, such as the operation of industries, and typically rural activities, such as urban and peri-urban agriculture, which is very strong in the municipality. Two of the main processes that result in peri-urbanization were also identified in the analyzed area: the marginalization of a part of the low-income city population through state investments and self-segregation.
