Abstract
The inclusion of green areas provides spaces that contribute to the improvement of the population's life and make it a means of interaction between human activities and the environment. As squares and parks are elements within the urban space, when well structured serve the population and assists to combat degradation, in addition to support the recovery, protection and conservation of environmental heritage. In this context, the present study aims to characterize the green areas of the urban perimeter of the municipality of Marechal Cândido Rondon. For this, it’s an approach to the evolution of urban space in relation to green areas in the period from 1960 to 2017, in addition to locating, quantifying and qualifying these areas in order to calculate the Green Area Index (GAI). To find out how the municipality is managing these areas, it was used the methodology proposed by Fontes and Shimbo (2003), which suggest that the planning and monitoring of these areas takes place and that there is a balance between quality, quantity and distribution. After this analysis, we realized the need to improve the existing green areas, the use of environmental protection areas and the insertion of new squares and linear parks, improving environmental quality and creating leisure options.
