Abstract

This article aims to analyze and understand the Festival of Freedom in the language of Geography, studying space and its relations, that is, deciphering the (change in) meanings that the festival gains in the current context, in a crossroads of different temporality and spatiality. Searching to understand what are its new uses and appropriations and the new representations that arise and/or redefine themselves within a complex process in which the Festival of Freedom increasingly tends to show, but still attracts citizens of Paranaiguara (GO), other regions and neighboring localities. Therefore, the approach which this article proposes, in the space-time context, is only possible by means of the relations between the subjects present in the place where starting from social change, the festival adapts itself. Sacred and profane, flows and stops, tradition and modernity, work and leisure, are elements that together compose the site of the Festival of Freedom. Thus, the methodological approaches adopted for the development of the study consisted of the following steps. In the first we performed a literature review about the festival to know its conceptual elements, with emphasis on the authors Marques (2011), Almeida and Mota (2010), Bourdin (2001), Pereira (2005), Della Monica (1999), among others. In the second step, after the literature survey, we moved on to the historical context of the Festival of Freedom. The third step consisted of carrying out fieldwork, a time which allowed for fifty questionnaires to be filled in during the days of the 2010 celebration.
