GEOGRAPHY AND CARTOGRAPHY: brief historic background

Abstract

The advances of the informational scientific technical resources meant a revolution in various fields of science. In this way, the processo of development experienced by society over recent decades has been demanding growing requirements from the experts regarding the quality and trust of their research and in this context, also of the Geography. Thus, the geographer requires each time, more technical, theoretical and cognitive conditions to promote the realization of their tasks. In this sense, geography, since its genesis has served as an interdisciplinary science of synthesis, developing concomitantly to the mapping, which is one of their main research tools. This paper presents a synopsis of the historical development and the correlation of these fields of knowledge that are linked according to historical materialism dialectical demand forms and means of political power in contemporary society.
