Abstract

The objective of this article is to discuss theoretical questions concerning different disciplinary interpretations regarding the concept of xenophobia. The objective is to justify the presence of several interferences in the interpretation of the term, considering geographic, social, economic and psychoanalytical assumptions that act significantly in the current social environment. A priori, through a bibliographical review, we discuss the conventions present in the course of history, that is, the question was briefly addressed in antiquity, mercantilism, and in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. For this, the xenophobic relations were characterized from two cutouts, the first deals with socio-spatial aspects and the second, with interpretations of psychoanalysis. It is a justifiable theme, since the term is based on preconceptions, and these circumstances influence the geopolitical direction of the migratory issue. The consequences of public policies, and the cultural behavior of a particular social group, may imply the precariousness of the quality of life of the non-native individuals, especially those belonging to economically peripheral locations. Thus, a simplified approach to xenophobia and the construction of prejudice against the other is presented, based on other interpretations beyond the geographic question, which are covered by sociological, economic and psychoanalytical analysis
