Abstract

During the first decades of the twenty-first century, the sugar-energy sector experienced an unprecedented expansion, doubling in less than ten years what the country took five hundred years to achieve in terms of cultivated area. Encouraged by this situation, in which the brazilian State played a central role in its consolidation, this expansion of the monopoly groups in the sugar and ethanol sector occurred in a context in which several studies have discussed the positive contributions and negative impacts of the expansion of the sugar and ethanol sector to the sugarcane municipalities, municipalities that in their majority have less than 20 thousand inhabitants, where the sugarcane activity assumes an increasingly monoagroindustrial form. In this context, the objective of this work is to discuss the socioeconomic dependence of the sugarcane sector in the sugarcane municipalities of the North and Northwest of Paraná, seeking to show the subjection of the territories territorialized by sugarcane agribusiness to the productive and reproductive logic of capitalist agriculture.
