TRECHEIROS’ MOBILITY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THEIR MATERIAL OBJECTS
Abstract
This study refers to the relevance of objects in the production and reproduction of life conditions focused on the case of “trecheiros” – individuals who live travelling between cities, walking by roadway sidewalks or utilizing bus tickets provided by social welfare services. This study was performed with homeless called “trecheiros” passing by a medium-sized city in Western São Paulo. Interviews and field observation were performed from a support stand for migrants and travelers installed in the local bus station. It was possible to note that material objects that “trecheiros” carry with themselves are indispensable for the survival. Unlike usual clients, “trecheiros” recalculate every day the meaning of objects they carry with themselves. “Trecheiros” modify their objects by using them for different purposes and by inserting them in their own lives, their subjective productions and in relationships they build up with other “trecheiros”.
