Abstract

The article presents a bibliographic review to assess the impact of using a cell phone (mobile phone) while driving. In addition, it inquired vehicle drivers from the city of Goiânia, Brazil, and its metropolitan region about the willingness to drive vehicles using the cell phone. From the literature review, it was found that the use of the cell phone while driving causes distraction of the driver by decreasing the stability of the eye and head, deviations from the planned routes and even losses in braking efficiency. In addition, research has shown that the reaction time of drivers is higher when using a cell phone while driving. The driver survey revealed that 53% are under 30; 40.1% are between 30 and 50 years old and 6.9% are over 50 years old. Of these, the use of cell phone to write messages and receive calls 33.22% (under 30 years old); 38.93% (30 and 50 years old) and 16.66% (over 50 years old). In addition, it is young people who reported being more involved in accidents, 17.70% and having been fined less, only 5.59%. There was no evidence that the most educated respondents do not use their cell phones while driving, that is, they are more aware citizens.
