Abstract

The fuel storage activities involve risks of accidents and leaks, consequently causing the pollution of the soils and groundwaters. Thus, this work aims to undertake a remediation study of this kind of pollutant source. Lab scale experiments were performed in order to remove the pollutants such as Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl and Xilenos (BTEX) by permeable reactive barrier system (PRBS) using soil, sand, coal and fine granulated stone and activated coal-based adsorption. After each different treatment times, the by-product of percolated was collected and analyzed by gaseous chromatography. In the first 48 h, the results have showed high removal efficiencies for all BTEX samples, mainly Ethylbenzene and Xilenos. Based on the present work, the PRB has shown as an alternative and effective system in order to avoid the environmental pollution.
