ANALYSIS OF DESIGN MODELS FOR PARTIALLY ENCASED COMPOSITE COLUMNS

Abstract

New methodologies for producing composite columns have been the subject of recent research, such as recycled aggregates and steel fibers' incorporation into concrete. Not yet included in current standards, they need validation through design models. This work compared the experimental results of partially encased composite columns with steel fiber reinforced concrete and recycled aggregate concrete to the resistance according to the ABNT NBR 8800 (2008) and EN-1994-1-1 (2004). The design models yielded satisfactorily prediction for the resistance, with higher discrepancies for slender columns. Furthermore, the imperfection eccentricity and the second-order effects must be considered to obtain representative results.
