Records of potential blood donors assisted in the Hemotherapy Nucleus of Apucarana (HNA) were analyzed in the 1990-1994 period. For the research of anti- Trypanosoma cruzi antibodies, the HNA used the techniques of immunofluorescence, hemaglutination, and ELISA, either in isolate or associate mode. From 7,868 potential donors, except the return donors, 150 (1.91%) showed positive result for at least one of the serological tests performed. Among potential donors with positive serology for Chagas disease, it was observed that at least 57.0% of them were born in the State of Paraná; 91.0% were males; 31.0% were workmen and 85% were 19-to-50-year-old individuals. From 12,195 potential donors submitted to serological screening, 4,327 (35.0%) were return donors. The clinical and serological screening excluded 47.0% of the potential donors from July to December 1994.Downloads
