Abstract

Three hundred and four male and female 7 - to - 9-year-old children from one public and one private school in Maringá were investigated to verify flatfoot incidence. Footprint diagnosis was obtained through a static podogram. Flatfoot incidence was observed in 24.34% of the children, of which 66.2% were males and 33.8% were females, showing a statistically significant difference. A predominance of flatfoot in children from the private school was verified. The condition occurred in greater proportion in white (25%), followed by mulatto (23%) and black (19%) children, but the differences were not statistically significant. The greater incidence of flatfoot in boys and in children from the private school may suggest that the continuous wearing of shoes has caused negative consequences to the feet morphophysiology.
