Effort and catch data series, as well as total length and maturity stages of curimatá (Prochilodus nigricans) obtained during 1992 and 1993, in Santarém, were used to describe the fishery and reprodution. Results suggest that the fishery of curimatá has a strong relationship with the hydrological cycle. The gillnet is responsible for 80% of the catch in lakes and rivers of several municipalities the Lower Amazon. The mean size of first sexual maturation estimated was 35.5 cm. Prochilodus nigricans makes reprodutive migration during the dry season and the spawning is synchronous with the early flood season.Downloads
