Abstract

The present work involved the study of the aspects of the population structure of the Metynnis rooseveltii Eigenmann, 1915 (Characidae, Mileynae), in the Jiqui Lake located in Parnamirim, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The specimens were sampled between March 1994 and February 1995, during which time 1,115 specimens (613 females and 502 males) were captured and analysed. The study dealt with aspects of the proportion between sexes, length and the total weight/total length ratio. It was observed that females predominated, when the total number of specimens captured was considered. Males predominated significantly in March, May and June, and between 06:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Of the specimens captured, a variation of 3.0 to 13.0 cm in length was noted, with the females achieving greater lengths than the males. In regard to the total weight and total length ratio, no significant differences have been observed between the sexes.
