Abstract

This study was elaborated with the purpose of analysing and drawing an epidemiological profile of Pitanga and Santa Maria do Oeste municipalities, both situated in the central region of the State of Paraná, in Brazil. It is based on the demographic structure trends and health indicators, between 1980 and 1993. The results show that there was a change in the age structure, indicating a trend towards the population aging and the increase of its characteristic illness - the chronic degenerative diseases. Although the health services improved, it was verified that the infectious diseases are still significant. The ill-defined causes reflect the bad quality due to the neglect in filling out death certificates.
